A professional-grade desktop interface

The Universal Audio Apollo Twin X Duo is a versatile 10-in/6-out audio interface in a compact desktop format that is designed for operation with Mac and PC via Thunderbolt 3. The most compact model in the Apollo X series and now in its second generation, it features two Unison preamps and is ideally suited to use in mobile and home studio applications; it has been completely redesigned and now incorporates improved 24-bit/192 kHz converters along with a range of enhanced features that include integrated speaker management and optional room correction. In the Duo version shown here, the Twin X is equipped with two SHARC processors for real-time use of DSP-based UAD plugins, widely regarded as industry standards. The UAD Analog Classics plugin bundle in turn includes over 30 plugins for professional-level recording and mixing.

A second-generation Apollo

The second generation of the Apollo X series goes far beyond the basic functions of an audio interface thanks to its enhanced features. The UAD Console software, for instance, also serves as a monitor controller, including bass management. While the larger rack-mounted interfaces enable complex immersive formats, the Apollo Twin X supports straightforward 2.1 systems that comprise two speakers and a subwoofer. The optional Sonarworks Apollo Monitor Correction add-on and a separately available measurement microphone can additionally be used for speaker calibration. This deep integration within the UAD Console will prove particularly advantageous in rooms that are not acoustically optimised, while the new mixer scenes and the practical Auto-Gain function allow a lot of time to be saved during recording.

Ideal for mobile use

With its two Unison preamps, one digital ADAT input, four analogue line outputs, and a powerful, high-quality headphone amplifier - all packed into a compact format - the Universal Audio Apollo Twin X Duo is an ideal companion for discerning musicians and producers on the move. Its capabilities are equally impressive in a home studio setting, where the high-quality 10-in/6-out audio interface performs exceptionally well. Seamless interaction between the preamps and DSP-based plugins is ensured through the use of Unison technology, which enables the authentic emulation of legendary vintage preamps with virtually no perceptible latency. UAD plugins can of course also be used for mixing and mastering with DAW software such as Cubase, Logic, Live, or Pro Tools.

About Universal Audio

Few manufacturers can draw upon a wealth of audio engineering experience comparable to that of Universal Audio. The company's founding father Bill Putnam, along with his friend Les Paul, have an admirable reputation as trend-setting music producers and developers of legendary analogue studio technology. Putnam recorded Chuck Berry, Muddy Waters, and Sarah Vaughan, and was Duke Ellington's favourite sound engineer. He developed the famous 1176 Peak Limiter and distributed the Teletronix LA-2A level amplifier. This earned him a posthumous "Technical Grammy Award" in 2000. In 1999, Putnam's sons, Bill Putnam Jr. and James Putnam, re-founded Universal Audio, transferring their father's analogue vision and craftsmanship to the digital music world. Their product range includes audio interfaces, dedicated DSP farms, and a variety of plugins, as well as analogue hardware devices.

Flexibility through cascading

The Universal Audio Apollo Twin X desktop interface will excel both in mobile applications and as part of a studio workstation. Thanks to its ability to be cascaded with other models in the series, the Twin X is also an attractive option for producers who need a a portable setup that can be expanded into a comprehensive studio system with additional Apollo interfaces and UAD-2 devices. Up to four Thunderbolt-enabled Apollo interfaces (including a single desktop interface such as the Apollo Twin X) or up to six UAD-2 devices (e.g. UAD-2 Satellite or UAD-2 PCIe cards) can be cascaded to form a studio configuration with multiple input and output options and substantial DSP processing power.

UAD Analog Classics bundle included

The Universal Audio Apollo Twin X Gen 2 is available in two versions, featuring either the UAD Analog Classics or the UAD Analog Classics Pro plugin bundle. Even the more compact UAD Analog Classics bundle provides a broad selection of over 30 predominantly DSP-powered effects that are considered standard tools in professional music production. These include preamps such as the UA 610, compressors like the Teletronix LA-2A, and multiple versions of the classic Pultec EQ, in addition to which more specialised effects, such as the Marshall Plexi amplifier simulation, the Oxide Tape Recorder, and Auto-Tune Realtime Access are also on board. The bundle additionally features the PolyMAX synth, adding a sound-generating instrument to the package.
