Probably the best field stereo recorder of 2026.
Discreet and compact, the Tascam FR-AV2 offers a multitude of settings, with sound quality worthy of the best professional microphones. Its 32-bit floating-point recording capability allows it to be attached directly to the stand of a pair of microphones and used to record classical or acoustic musicians, or actors, with impeccable quality without cluttering the stage with wires. Its battery life is sufficient for long concerts. However, keep in mind the power consumption of some condenser microphones, which can sometimes require a significant amount of power. If needed, an external USB battery will provide additional power. The small buttons are a bit fiddly to operate, but the very clever Tascam AK-BT2 Bluetooth adapter allows you to remotely control the device with a smartphone or tablet, controlling the audio remotely with excellent quality. It handles timecode input and output. It's the Swiss Army knife of portable professional stereo recording.
