Fine-tuning an all-rounder

The Selmer Présence II 17/6 B-flat clarinet was developed to meet the needs of musicians of every level and every musical style, with the aim of establishing the new Présence range as "the ultimate all-round instrument". This Boehm-system B-flat clarinet is the second generation of the Présence line, which has established itself since its launch as a benchmark for professionals players' first clarinets, combining exemplary sound quality with a high level of playing comfort. It brings together the tonal qualities shared by all Henri Selmer Paris instruments, with a full sound and excellent response. For the current version, the renowned French workshop has kept the Présence’s proven qualities while making targeted improvements to its acoustics, ergonomics, and aesthetic.

Upgrading the worldwide standard

At its heart, the Selmer Présence II 17/6 is a Boehm-system clarinet with 17 keys and 6 rings, the most widespread Boehm configuration internationally. Compared with basic beginner instruments, the Présence II goes further in several respects: Its body is made of natural, oiled grenadilla wood, and the upper joint features Selmer's innovative Evolution system. The two pads on the ring keys are made of Gore-Tex for an especially precise feel, while all the others are Valentino synthetic pads. The keywork is silver-plated, and the thumb rest can be adjusted in four directions. Included are two newly designed barrels, 64.5mm and 65.5mm long, along with a Selmer Echo mouthpiece, a Présence case, and further accessories.

Balanced sound on every stage

As a first professional clarinet, the Selmer Présence II 17/6 is aimed at ambitious clarinettists ready to step up from a beginner's instrument, as well as at professionals looking for a reliable instrument for teaching, orchestral work, and the stage. Selmer has made targeted improvements to the sound, too: The newly designed tenon rings are wider, at 7mm, and use more material, giving the instrument greater resonance. A reworked internal bell shape also makes the sound more even across the registers, and the two barrels allow the clarinet to be adapted to different playing conditions. That makes the Présence a reliable companion everywhere from lessons at the conservatoire to concerts in the orchestra pit. Nor is it tied to one style: Whether in symphonic repertoire or jazz, it should particularly suit musicians who move between different styles.

About Selmer

Henri Selmer Paris, founded in 1885 by Henri Selmer – a clarinettist and graduate of the Paris Conservatoire – is a legendary French manufacturer of wind instruments. Initially producing clarinet mouthpieces, the company soon expanded to full clarinets and gained global recognition for its craftsmanship and quality. Selmer became particularly renowned for its saxophones, which have been favoured by countless jazz musicians since the 1920s. Beyond saxophones and clarinets, Selmer also crafts trumpets, trombones, and horns, continually refining its instruments through collaborations with leading musicians and the use of premium materials.

Evolution technology

One of the typical weak points of any clarinet is the upper joint, which, in the worst case, can develop cracks even with the most careful handling. This is exactly what Selmer’s Evolution technology addresses: The bore is lined with a next-generation resin, which forms a watertight barrier that stops moisture from getting into the wood fibres. This gives the instrument greater stability and longevity, while preserving the acoustic properties of a traditional wooden clarinet. It’s a genuine innovation, then, and one Henri Selmer Paris stands fully behind. How fully? Well, the renowned brand offers a 10-year warranty on the upper joint of all its Evolution clarinets. That should speak for itself.
