Medium gauge, pack of ten

The D'Addario EXL115 is one of the company's most versatile electric guitar string sets – a Medium gauge (.011, .014, .018, .028, .038, .049) in nickel-plated steel roundwound construction, manufactured in New York and largely unchanged in specification since 1974. The 10P designation is a pack of 10 full sets, priced below the equivalent individual purchase – aimed at players who restring frequently enough that buying in volume is simply the rational choice. Colour-coded ball ends run across the entire D'Addario XL range, making it easy for guitarists to select individual strings from this money-saving multipack if they're only replacing a single string.

Hex core and nickel wrap

D'Addario's hexagonal core wire – introduced in the early 1970s and proprietary to the XL series – provides a mechanical grip on the winding that a round core does not. The result is a winding that stays seated under tension, contributing to the set's tuning stability and consistent intonation across the full scale length. The nickel-plated steel wrap produces the familiar EXL115 tonal profile: A bright, clearly defined fundamental with a well-developed harmonic response, supported by a slightly fuller low-end and more pronounced low-mid presence compared to lighter gauges. As expected from a Medium set, tension is a touch higher across the range, resulting in a firmer, more controlled feel under the picking hand – particularly on the wound strings. The set remains versatile across clean and driven contexts, staying articulate under gain while offering a more grounded response in denser mixes.

Who buys 60 strings at once?

The multi-pack format targets working guitarists, touring musicians, guitar technicians, and teaching studios that maintain several instruments. At Medium gauge, the EXL115 sits at the point in the XL range where tension and control take priority – firm enough for heavy rhythm work and stable under dropped tunings, while still allowing for expressive playing when needed. The honest gauge consideration is straightforward: Players who prefer a lighter feel or emphasise bending and vibrato may find .009s or .010s a better fit. However, guitarists who like both some mass under the pick and the additional tension (particularly when tuning down) will feel at home with .011s. These other gauges are also available in equivalent multi-packs.

About D'Addario

In the world of stringed instruments, D'Addario is one of the largest manufacturers of strings themselves. The origins of the brand date back to 17th century Italy, but production was moved to New York in 1905 and even today, the brand's strings are still made and further developed in the USA. D'Addario now offers something for every need, from simple and low-priced strings to coated models and Hex-core strings. Apart from strings, the range has been expanded to include various accessories for guitarists, and other brands such as Planet Waves, Evans, Rico, and Pro Mark, which manufacture accessories for various groups of instruments, now also belong to D'Addario.

Genres, styles, and the XL range

The .011–.049 gauge shifts the focus towards a firmer feel and greater stability under the picking hand. Solid-body electrics – particularly dual-humbucker designs and instruments set up for heavier styles – take well to the EXL115, especially where more tension is needed for rhythm work or lower tunings. The nickel-plated wrap handles clean and driven tones without significant character shift between the two, staying controlled under high gain while retaining enough clarity for lead lines in Metal and Hard Rock. For players whose gauge requirements differ, the D'Addario XL range covers a wide span of options, with .009 and .010 multi-packs also available from Thomann for those who prefer a lighter feel at reduced tension. For even better value, these three most popular string sets are also available as bulk packs of 25 sets, for a full 150 strings in one solid carton.

e
Best of the "old school" strings

There are better string sets, e.g. when it comes to durability, but overall quality and price is a solid combination. After several years with 10/52 gauge, I changed to 11/49 and now it's my standard for all electrics. Works for Telly, Strat, 335 and LP.

Been big fan of D'Addario products from 1981... steel string acoustics and bass included.

I have used these strings on my electric guitars with standard tunings for a few years now and when properly maintained, they last a few months easily. Also I have not had any breakages although I use them with a tremolo system as well. Excellent strings!

Strings! Lots of strings!

It's a sad day when you realise you can't enjoy any of your four electric guitars. Two need set up and two have horribly rusty strings (my fault, I should change them more often than annually). Enter this cute little blue box. I'm a big Daddario fan, their EXL strings have been on my guitars for years. They stay bright and fresh for ages longer than their rivals and I've only snapped one in the last decade (due to a wonky jazzmaster bridge, not the string's fault). I'm a bit of a chord basher and these strings take a lot of punishment and stay sounding great for far too long. Well done Daddario.

I like this big box, no excess packaging and the string sets are in the standard grey bag, was easy enough to chuck a few spare sets in my gig bag without messing around with endless cardboard packaging.

Such a great deal!

Save a lot and buy this box set of 10 right now! I've used these for a long time and have always liked them.

I use them on a AVRI Jazzmaster and they really make the instrument sing. Last decently long and have not had any bizarre brakes all the time I have used them.
