Eight channels and 32-bit floating point

The eight-channel Zoom F8n Pro represents the manufacturer's flagship field recorder, combining 32-bit floating-point recording, dual A/D conversion, and professional low-noise preamps with an EIN of -127dBu. Each of its eight individually controllable input channels features an XLR/jack combo socket, dedicated LED metering, and a convenient PFL/Solo button for detailed monitoring and control. Accurate timecode generation with 0.2ppm precision is provided via BNC input and output connections, making the recorder suitable for demanding production environments. Recordings can be stored redundantly on two SD, SDHC, or SDXC cards with capacities of up to 1TB, or backed up simultaneously to a computer via USB. In addition, the F8n Pro includes a range of internal processing options, such as flexible signal routing, M/S decoding, and adjustable input and output delays for greater versatility in professional workflows.

Ample dynamics at all times

The Zoom F8n Pro's dual A/D conversion system uses separate converters for low and high input levels, with a dedicated algorithm continuously monitoring the signal and automatically selecting the most suitable converter. Combined with 32-bit floating-point processing, this approach provides an extensive dynamic range and removes the need to worry about clipping during recording. This makes the frequent transitions between quiet dialogue and louder sound sources on film sets much easier to manage. It also leaves greater flexibility during post-production, where recordings can be adjusted without the usual compromises caused by limited headroom. For 16-bit and 24-bit recordings, the F8n Pro additionally offers an Auto-Mix function that can automatically control input levels when required.

F8n Pro – a film sound expert

The Zoom F8n Pro is a professional field recorder designed for filmmakers and audio specialists who require reliable performance in demanding production environments. With eight inputs and ten recording tracks, it provides the flexibility needed to capture complex sound arrangements with ease, while its precise timecode functionality ensures accurate synchronisation between audio and video. The recorder also supports Ambisonic workflows, making it suitable for creating immersive spatial audio content for VR, AR, and other applications. A range of remote control options further expands its versatility, including the F-Control hardware controller with USB connectivity and the F8 Control app for iOS and Android devices. Power can be supplied in several ways, with support for eight AA batteries, an external DC battery pack via Hirose connector, or the included Zoom AD-19 mains adaptor for studio-based operation.

About Zoom

Founded in 1983, the Japanese company Zoom manufactures a variety of audio equipment, including a range of portable "handy" recorders as well as multi-effects processors, effects pedals, drum machines, and samplers. Over the past thirty years, the company has built a reputation for producing innovative yet affordable products based on original microchip designs. Since the Zoom-9002 (an ultra-compact multi-effects processor that can be attached to a guitar strap) was introduced in 1990, Zoom has become one of the leaders in digital audio processing.

Multi-track recorder with class

Zoom's flagship field recorder supports mono and stereo recording in BWF-compliant WAV format, with sample rates of up to 192kHz and 32-bit floating-point resolution for maximum flexibility. It also offers 47.952 and 48.048kHz sample rates to ensure compatibility with high-definition video workflows, while extended metadata entry allows important details such as project names, scene numbers, and dates to be stored alongside recordings. The F8n Pro's internal processing tools include features such as phase inversion and high-pass filtering, helping to reduce unwanted noise and maintain clean signals. Additional connectivity is provided by two mini-XLR inputs for an external mixer and a 3.5mm stereo sub-output for direct connection to a camera. Beyond its standalone recording capabilities, the F8n Pro can also function as an 8-in/4-out USB audio interface with support for 32-bit floating-point recording at 96kHz.

In the spotlight: Ten-pin microphone connection

The proprietary ten-pin microphone connection allows the Zoom F8n Pro to work with a range of interchangeable microphone capsules, providing flexibility when adapting to different recording situations. The manufacturer offers a broad selection of compatible options, including XY and MS stereo capsules as well as highly directional microphone solutions for more focused capture. It should be noted, however, that the XAH-8, EXH-8, and VRH-8 capsules are not supported by this system. For greater placement flexibility, an optional extension cable is also available, allowing the microphone capsule to be positioned away from the recorder itself. This can be particularly useful when a more discreet or practical microphone setup is required.

Zoom F8n Pro is.. professionel
Henrik Y 18.07.2023
To me its the best portable 8 track recorder out there for the price.
I have done countless recordings on stages and in the field and it never fails. Nice and good sound. I use 32 bit float wav and mix/master in Cubase 14. When I bought Zoom F8n Pro I bought 2 so I have 16 track if needed. Sync funktion between the 2 works also good.
I have 30 years of recording experience.

RA
Great value, good product
Ragnar A 14.08.2026
This is a great recorder which doesn't feel outdated at all, well except for the old USB mini port.

At first I didn't like the size and form of the fader knobs, headphone level knob or the power button, but after some use I got used to it, but they are small and not comfortable to use.

The sound quality is great, the usability and interface are very nice with lots of options and customisability, it's a true professional device, I had ordered a Sound devices Mixpre 10 II as an upgrade over the F8n pro, but after comparing the two I preferred the F8n pro to the Mixpre 10 II and returned the Mixpre.

I was so happy with the F8n pro that I bought a second one, and here it took a down turn, the main selection encoder was basically defective on the second one and needed to be pressed hard to register clicks, you hear and feel the clicks of the presses but nothing happens before you press extra hard.
